MUNKUS, one of South Africa’s most exciting luxury apparel brands has won the prestigious Trans-seasonal Award at the Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards. Presented by Country Road, this is one of the most coveted honours at the annual awards ceremony, and rewards quality design that aspires to be timeless, and made to last. Through their careful, versatile, and thoughtful designs, MUNKUS has shown that it is invested in the longevity of its garments, which in turn supports slower production cycles.
MUNKUS is an emerging South African fashion brand founded by Thando Ntuli in 2019. Located in the bustling heart of Johannesburg, the brand is inspired by the strong, intergenerational line of mothers in Thando’s life. In just a few short years, the brand’s visual identity has become instantly recognisable for its 80s and 90s South African-inspired silhouettes. Each design seeks to be innovative and design-forward, in doing so it speaks to contemporary consumers while being steeped in traditional tailoring methods.
“We believe in four principles,” says Thando, “Sustainable natural fabrics, ethical manufacturing, recyclable packaging, and product care. We believe sustainable fashion is the future, and we’re trying to contribute. We aim to create bespoke pieces that are both long-lasting and timeless with the intention of being handed from generation to generation, ensuring they stand the test of time and won’t end up in landfill after just a few years.”
This is a cause that is close to the heart of the Country Road brand. The brand has also been an early and ongoing supporter of the Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards. In 2022, the partnership presented the coveted Changemaker Award. In its ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and reimagine the luxury retail experience, Country Road also recently unveiled its new future-fit store in the V&A Waterfront, in Cape Town, targeting a 5-Star Green Star interior certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa.
“As a brand, we are built on – and driven by – the principles of sustainable design and ethical practices,” says Connie Swartbooi, Head of Marketing at Country Road Group RSA, “which is why we have been a supporter of Twyg’s Sustainable Fashion Awards for years. This year, Country Road is proud to once again partner with Twyg as the sponsor of the coveted Trans-seasonal Award – a category we believe truly highlights the critical importance of future-fit design and ongoing conscious consumerism. MUNKUS was a deserving winner, who aligns with our sustainability ethos and we look forward to seeing success in their brand journey.”
Jackie May, Founder and Editor at Twyg commented, “This is our fifth annual Twyg Sustainable Fashion Awards 2023. The Twyg Awards is on a mission to grow this caring community of designers and makers and thinkers and retailers who want change. We amplify and celebrate and encourage this change”.
